Works begin on India’s first state-of-the-art river ferry terminal

06 Jul 2022

The Chief Minister of Assam laid the foundation stone for the new ferry terminal, which will provide passengers a safe and pleasant experience as of 2024. Our experts are responsible for the terminal design, feasibility studies and cost estimates.

On May 13, 2022, the Chief Minister of India’s Assam state, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the construction works on the Guwahati Gateway Ghat, the country’s first state-of-the-art river ferry terminal. Client Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society called upon our Ports & Waterways teams in India to prepare the terminal concept design. Our experts are also responsible for the detailed project report and front-end engineering and design, or “FEED” studies, consisting of feasibility studies and cost estimates. The project is funded by the World Bank.

Guwahati, the largest metropolis in northeastern India, is situated on the south bank of the Brahmaptura river. The river ferry terminal will provide a variety of amenities such as cafes, a canteen and accessibility ramps. Passengers in Guwahati and nearby river access points, or “ghats,” will benefit from safe and enjoyable transportation along the river all year round.

Representation of the future state-of-the-art river ferry terminal

“The ultra-modern Guwahati ferry terminal is a milestone for waterways development in India. Improved ferry services and infrastructure will promote regional integration, leisure activities and tourism. Most importantly, convenient river transportation will help mitigate the impact of climate change by easing road traffic congestion.”
