Supporting ENGIE’s battery storage ambitions in Belgium

27 mei 2025

Tractebel helps ENGIE build its second large-scale battery park in Belgium, contributing to shaping a flexible, reliable and sustainable energy system in the country.

The construction of ENGIE’s newest battery storage facility was officially launched in Kallo, Belgium, on 13 May in the presence of Federal Energy Minister Mathieu Bihet, Beveren Mayor Marc Van de Vijver, and ENGIE Belgium CEO Vincent Verbeke. Once operational in spring 2027, the facility will provide 400 MWh of storage capacity, enough to power over 48,000 homes for four hours.

Owner's Engineer role

Since the beginning of the project, Tractebel has served as Owner’s Engineer for this landmark project, reinforcing its commitment to accelerating the energy transition. Tractebel brings its multidisciplinary expertise to oversee the project’s technical design, construction, and commissioning phases. After assisting with the basic design and tender documents' completion, our engineers, who work within ENGIE’s integrated team, are now providing technical assistance, studies and supervising the detailed design, construction, and commissioning phases. Our team ensures the facility meets the highest safety, performance, and sustainability standards.

Enhancing grid flexibility

Spread across nearly two hectares, the Kallo site will host 110 battery modules capable of delivering 100 MW of power to the grid. This project is the second largest of ENGIE’s battery park projects, after the Vilvorde site (200 MW). Battery storage is a cornerstone of ENGIE’s strategy to enhance grid flexibility and integrate renewable energy sources. By storing excess wind and solar power and releasing it when needed, the Kallo facility will help balance supply and demand, ensuring a more stable and resilient electricity network.

"This project is a perfect example of how Tractebel's engineering expertise can provide optimised solutions that help clients reduce CAPEX deliver their sustainable projects on time. On very short notice, Tractebel prepared all technical documentation and specifications for the calls for tenders."
Johan Baert, Technical Advisor BESS & Grid Connection, Tractebel

The project is now on track to meet its objectives to connect to the grid by spring 2027, thanks to the excellent collaboration between ENGIE and Tractebel. We are proud to contribute to the construction of a facility that will play a vital role in Belgium’s carbon-neutral future."
Zohra M'Talssi, Project Manager, Tractebel
