Eight new desalination plants for Saudi Arabia

08 apr 2019

Tractebel was recently awarded the owner’s engineering mission for the construction of eight new SWRO desalination plants in Saudi Arabia.

Tractebel recently received the Letter of Award from the Saudi Arabian Saline Water Conversion Company for the owner’s engineering mission for the construction of eight desalination Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) projects along the West Coast of Saudi Arabia, three sites South and five sites North of Jeddah. The owner’s engineering mission includes design review, project management and construction supervision.

The project has two phases, construction of the eight sites in 15 months, and Warranty Services over the remaining 12 months. As a fast-track project, the design review is well advanced with several meetings already held in Saudi Arabia, and site construction commencing in the last week of March. The first site staff are already mobilised by Tractebel and are in position on site in Duba City.

Tractebel will employ more than 120 people in the two offices in Riyadh and Jeddah and on the eight sites. The project is both challenging from a coordination point of view, but also due to the coast line of Saudi Arabia, covering hundreds of kilomentres between sites. The EPC consists of a consortium of four local contractors, which also extends the complexity of planning and coordination.

“This is a key project for Tractebel both in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region, as it is the first large and fully dedicated SWRO desalination owner’s engineering mission of this scale, undertaken by the company in the last 10 years or so,” said Rob Higgo, General Manager of Tractebel in Saudi Arabia and the Project Director.
