Learn interesting facts about the study "Variable Renewable Energy Integration & Planning" - from the perspective of the World Bank, the grid operator and our expert Karsten Schmitt.

Study for renewable energy in Pakistan

The World Bank commissioned Tractebel to carry out the investigation of future solar and wind energy capacity in Pakistan. Our experts identified the opportunities and risks associated with the integration of renewable energy in the national power grid. The objective is to reduce the costs and emissions of electricity generation over the coming two decades and increase the share of domestic resources.

To do this, our specialists used a least-cost analysis for all the electricity generation options and took possible grid limitations into account. Here they used the PLEXOS optimisation model. On the basis of the results they also advised the Ministry of Energy on the development of renewable energy and provided the National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC) with consulting services for the official planning of the expansion of generation capacity up to 2047.

Further information on the study, which was officially launched on 10 November 2020 by the World Bank and NTDC, can be found here.

The webinar on the study

On 3 December the key results of the study are to be presented and the methodology, data sources, assumptions and the consultation process summarised and explanations provided about how the study fits into the ongoing work and analyses of both the NTDC and the World Bank. The webinar also offers the opportunity for questions and answers.

Our energy system planner Karsten Schmitt will be explaining, among other things, the approach taken by our experts, the results they came to and their recommendations.

You can look forward to the following topics on 3 December from 12:00 – 13:00 CET:

12:05 CET:
Introduction and background to the study; Oliver Knight, World Bank

12:10 CET:
