Upper Mugu Hydropower Project

The Upper Mugu Karnali Hydroelectric Project (UMKHEP) is a peaking run-of-river (PRoR) hydropower project proposed along the Mugu Karnali river in Mugu district of Karnali Province in Nepal. The design discharge of the plant is 90.2 Cumecs. The plant, which is in a surface powerhouse shall utilize a maximum gross head of 420.35 m between maximum operation level of 2281.6 msl.

The main features of the project include the following structures:

• Barrage, 27 m high (from invert level), with 4 radial gates, each of size 10 m (w) x 10 m (h)
• Two Approach Tunnels, inverted D-shaped, each about 1 km long and of size 5 m (w) x 5 m (h)
• Underground Desander with four chambers, each of size 110 m (l) x 12 m (w) x 9 m (h)
• Headrace Tunnel, horseshoe shaped, about 16 km long and of size 7 m (w) x 7 m (h)
• Underground Surge Shaft, restricted orifice type, about 67 m high and of 20 m diameter
• Penstock steel pipe 2289 m long and of 4.3 m diameter (maximum)
• Surface Powerhouse, with 4 x 60 MW Pelton turbines, of installed capacity 240 MW (licensed capacity of 306 MW)
• Surface Switchyard
• Transmission line, double circuit of 400 kV voltage
