The Manantali dam is located on the Bafing River in the Senegal River Basin in Mali. The multipurpose scheme is operated by the Société de Gestion de l’Energie de Manantali, SOGEM. It was constructed between 1982 and 1988. The dam is 1,460 m long and 66 m high. It includes a 480 m long central concrete section accommodating all hydraulic structures and two lateral rockfill embankments. The project serves the regularisation of the flow of the Senegal River and for the irrigation of 255,000 hectares of land. In 2002, a 200 MW power plant with five Kaplan turbines was added. Tractebel has been continuously involved since early stages. It was responsible for the construction supervision of the dam, the recent refurbishment of the generating units and for the design works of the rehabilitation of the civil structures.
