Diamer Basha dam project on the Indus River is located in the Northern Areas, some 40 km downstream of the town of Chilas and some 82 km upstream of the town of Dasu. The region is affected by earthquakes. The Seismic Hazard Evaluation Study undertaken during the course of the studies determined three design levels for peak ground acceleration: 0.22g for OBE, 0.37g for MDE, and 0.46g for MCE. The project consists of three main components: a 272 m high concrete gravity dam and two underground power stations; one on each side of the river with 2,250 MW installed capacity each.
