Tractebel, Hatch and Laurentis Energy Partners to develop nuclear technology solutions for industrial clients worldwide

07 Dec 2023

Tractebel and the two Canadian-headquartered companies are joining forces to develop a one-stop shop to support industrial Small Modular Reactor (SMR) clients worldwide.

The alliance builds on Hatch and Tractebel’s previously announced cooperation agreement to include Laurentis, which has been leading the development of SMR projects across North America and Europe by forging partnerships with industry and other organizations.

Together, the three companies will leverage their combined skills, expertise, and experience to support clients looking to develop SMR projects. The partnership approach will ultimately help streamline processes, significantly reduce risks, and ensure lessons learned are transferred from one project to the next.

SMRs: Key Facts

  • SMRs can range from one megawatt (MW) to approximately 300 MW. High-temperature SMRs could be deployed for industrial use, to reduce emissions and provide much-needed high-temperature heat and steam to heavy industries.

  • Industries including chemical, oil and gas, and mining could use SMRs, which offer greater scalability and site flexibility for locations unable to accommodate more traditional, larger reactors.

“The global energy landscape is changing rapidly,” said Jason Van Wart, President and CEO of Laurentis Energy Partners. “With a growing demand for clean, safe, and reliable electricity, the investments being made in new nuclear development represent significant business potential that extend well beyond the nuclear industry. Together with Hatch and Tractebel, we can help heavy industry clients reach climate change goals by leveraging our individual and collective strengths to provide end-to-end solutions that bring nuclear energy projects to life.”

“Hatch, Laurentis, and Tractebel’s cooperation will be crucial to the construction of SMRs in Europe and in North America,” said Denis Dumont, Tractebel’s Chief Global Nuclear Officer. “We are honoured to cooperate with these two major partners that have strong roots in the North American industrial and nuclear markets. Tractebel will bring its international nuclear new build and design authority experience to the alliance. By summoning our strengths, we can build bridges between the North American and European energy ecosystems to accelerate the energy transition through SMR technologies.”

“We are pleased to collaborate with Laurentis and Tractebel,” says Amar Jolly, Global Director Nuclear, Hatch. “Our collective experience creates a win-win for nuclear and industrial clients interested in leveraging nuclear to decarbonize, as well as for our communities and our climate. We believe that nuclear will be instrumental in the energy transformation and in achieving our global net zero goals, including the decarbonization of heavy industries.”
