Colossal construction project taking shape in Monaco

11 Apr 2023

Testimonio II is among the biggest ongoing construction projects in the Principality of Monaco, due for completion in 2024. It combines 378 apartments, an international school and day-care centre, and a sweeping view of Monaco. Tractebel’s experts have been closely involved from the start.

Testimonio II is a large-scale construction project including two residential towers of 378 state-owned apartments, a 50-place daycare centre, and the new site of the International School of Monaco which will accommodate up to 700 students. Some 56 exceptional apartments and five villas, each with terraced gardens and private swimming pools, complete the project. This modern complex in the east of Monaco will stretch from Boulevard d’Italie to Avenue Princesse-Grace, over a surface of 9,755 m2.

Tractebel’s Infrastructures experts on-site since 2013

Tractebel’s engineers have been involved from the start of the design process, and are in charge of the structural and geotechnical engineering, alongside our client SAM Testimonio II (Group Marzocco & VINCI Immobilier), architects Cabinet Giraldi / Arquitectonica, and companies VINCI Construction, Caroli Bat, and Satri. Our Infrastructures experts are currently providing technical support to the architects during the works phase. The project hit a milestone in October 2022, with the completion of structural works for the T2 bis Tower.

Monaco presents unique challenges

The site is a particularly challenging one, sitting atop a freshwater water spring and with a 40-metre difference between downstream and upstream. The project is also subject to significant seismic constraints. It is a highly urbanised site with the added constraint of having to maintain road traffic flow, as the Larvotto boulevard passes directly through the project. In this difficult topographical and geotechnical context, our teams are in charge of project management for the supports (and associated structures) and foundations of this project.

“The project is a fine example of our ambition of engineering a carbon-neutral future. All the stakeholders have adopted a strong environmental approach, from the design phase, which allows HQE certification or reduction of steel and concrete quantities by the use of prestressing technique, to the construction phase, allowing the reduction of greenhouse gases through the use of very low-carbon concrete. Our teams have managed many layers of complexity, including the preservation of the water source present on-site. The project is ongoing, but our teams can be very proud of what has already been achieved.”
