Designing a future-proof stadium in Sardinia

On February 28th, the 3 shortlisted finalists out of 25 bidders were called in to present their design proposal of Cagliari Calcio’s new stadium to institutions, media and fans.

All three finalists’ proposals are now showcased until 9th March in a special exhibition at Sardinia Arena. Open to the public, the exhibition invites fans and the local community to give their feedback on the proposed concepts.

Designed to reflect harmony with the surrounding nature, the stadium aims to be a lighthouse for the city. Not only a home for football, but a multi-purpose complex to enjoy every day of the week, attracting and hosting not only fans, but all types of visitors beyond match days.

The stadium is designed to receive over 24,000 spectators, which could eventually grow to 30,000. Every single aspect of the complex and the surroundings has been thought to make the "stadium experience" unique and integrate the stadium into the urban area and city life. The respect of natural resources is guaranteed by the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies in terms of energy production and storage, water saving, and reuse of any waste material. The use of natural ventilation and the choice of technology with low energy consumption will contribute to a sustainable use of resources in order to get a Near-Zero Emission building and obtain a Leed certification.

The design has been made with the use of Building information modelling (BIM) tools. The winning proposal should be selected by April and construction is expected to end by June, 2021.
