Period 2014 - 2029

In Flemish Brabant, structural traffic jams towards Brussels grow every year. The Brabantnet project responds to current and future transport demand and offers a sustainable solution by realizing high-quality public transport. Since 2014, Tractebel, Ney, Bureau Bas Smets have been conducting research into quality integration of the various tram lines and possible added values that could be realized together with the tram project. Thus, in addition to new tram infrastructure, a finely-meshed pedestrian and bicycle network is being developed that connects business zones and village centers. Furthermore, the project is also a lever for local opportunities such as, for example, upgrading public spaces, restoring slow traffic links, strengthening and accelerating urban development, etc.
This project concerns the development of three new tram/tram-bus lines in the northern periphery of Brussels.

Namely:

Express tram connecting Willebroek to Londerzeel, Meise, Grimbergen and Brussels-North station in 40 minutes over a distance of 29 km.

Airport tram connecting Brussels-North station with the Brussels Airport in 30 minutes over a distance of 12 km.

Ringtrambus:This new line was put into operation in June 2020 and is largely exclusive of its own track. The vehicles are 24 m long hybrid buses - 137 passengers. The line may be converted to a streetcar line in the future.

These public transit projects require a complete redesign of public spaces along the routes and around the stops of these new public transit lines. A finely meshed pedestrian and bicycle network will also be developed.
