Cirata floating solar power plant inaugurated by the President of Indonesia

04 Dec 2023

The President of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo, presided over the inauguration ceremony of the first floating PV project in Indonesia, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and the third largest worldwide. Representatives of Tractebel in Indonesia attended the ceremony as the project management consultant.

The Cirata Floating Solar PV plant in Cirata, West Java Province, Indonesia, inaugurated on 9 November 2023, aims to convert the energy from sunlight into 145 MWac worth of electricity that will be distributed to different areas in West Java. The electricity produced will meet the needs of 50,000 Indonesian households. PT PMSE (Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Masdar Solar Energi) is a joint venture between PLN Nusantara Renewables and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC - Masdar.

The project installed over 300,000 photovoltaic modules on 13 islands that float in a reservoir with depths up to 100m and 20m water level variation. More than 750,000 floaters are being used to create these 13 floating islands, and more than 2,000 concrete anchors are required to secure all floating islands in their position. The mooring system is engineered to limit the movement radius of the floating islands, even with water level variation in the reservoir that can go up to 20m. Due to the limited access to the project location, the floating platform used to install the anchor was a modular arrangement from the fabrication yard before being assembled on site. The total area of the floating systems, including its mooring arrangement, is up to 250 Ha.

The electricity generated by the 13 floating islands will power up to 50,000 Indonesian households.

The inauguration by the President of Indonesia marks the strong commitment of the government of Indonesia towards the implementation of renewable energy projects. It is a project of reference for different ministries in Indonesia to develop rules, regulations, and recommended practices for floating PV systems in the future. Considering the uniqueness and the scale of the project, it is categorized as a strategic project by the Indonesian government. Tractebel in the Middle East / Asia (MEA) takes pride in providing robust engineering consultancy services and becoming the pioneer of consultancy services in such an innovative technology. It has proven Tractebel's capability to deliver large-scale renewable projects to meet its target of achieving a carbon-neutral future.

The inauguration of the Cirata Floating Solar PV plant took place in the presence of the President of Indonesia. Representing Tractebel were APAC Regional Manager Etienne Drouet and Indonesia Country Manager Anggiat Sitorus.
