Find out moreOur transport infrastructure experts signed a mandate on April 25, 2025, to provide technical services on the first metro project in the Western Balkans. This is our second contract on this groundbreaking initiative, which will change the face of mobility in Belgrade and Serbia.
By improving its public transport networks, the Serbian authorities aim to encourage sustainable urban development. The city of Belgrade has therefore launched an ambitious project to build three driverless metro lines. Our Urban, Tunnel and Geology specialists from Tractebel in France will support clients on the biggest infrastructure project in Serbia.
Our infrastructure experts will contribute to the development of the functional pre-feasibility design for the metro facilities, consisting of stations, tunnel sections and shafts. As principal consultant, we will ensure compliance with the requirements of the system contractor, and perform the review of the documentation. The scope of this mandate, our second for the Belgrade Metro project, includes delivering the following key services for each metro station facility: Review of the existing preliminary design; and preparation of the general functional design.

This historic urban transport project is the first metro project in the Western Balkans and the largest infrastructure project in Serbia. The project consists of three metro lines serving the Republic of Serbia’s capital. Planned in conjunction with urban developments and heavy rail transport projects, the largely underground driverless metro project will cross the city and the Sava and Danube rivers. The first two lines will converge at Savski Trg, Belgrade’s historic main railway station.
With the addition of a third line, already foreseen, the metro network will cover nearly 60 km and serve 61 stations.

“The Belgrade Metro is more than just a transportation project—it’s a game-changer for the people and the future of Serbia,” says Maja Veljkovic, Business Development Manager, Infrastructures, Tractebel in France. “This modern, decarbonized, and fully automated metro will improve daily life by providing faster, safer, and cleaner mobility while reducing traffic and pollution. As the country’s largest infrastructure project, it will boost economic growth, create jobs, and enhance connectivity. This project is a testament to Tractebel’s dedication to engineering a carbon-neutral future, combining our global expertise in smart, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure to transform urban mobility. We are also proud to support our long-term partners in delivering this landmark project for Serbia.”
