New tram section for world’s first nationwide free public transport network

Luxembourg’s free public transportation network has gained a new segment on its Luxtram line. Section C is an additional 1.2-km segment - part of the 16.2-km tram network - with two new tram stations, including a multimodal exchange hub. Close collaboration between Tractebel’s Infrastructures experts and the consortium made it possible to complete both design and execution of works in just 18 months. 

A moving event for Luxembourg’s transport infrastructure 
Section C of the Luxtram transport infrastructure segment was inaugurated with great fanfare on September 11, 2022. On hand to celebrate were the Luxembourgish Minister of Mobility François Bausch, the Mayor of Luxembourg City Lydie Polfer and the General Manager of client Luxtram SA André Von der Marck.

Tractebel and partners keep the project on track 
The works performed by the consortium for section C included all the systems required for tramway operation: infrastructure (railroads, platforms, multitubulars, overhead contact line), equipment (remote monitoring & control systems, railway signaling, traffic lights, transformer station, etc.) and related infrastructures such as stations, areas adjacent to the carriageway. The consortium is composed of contractors Sopinor, Frateur-De Pourcq and SOCOM, with Tecna, Tractebel, Luxplan and Geprolux as the design team. 
 

Happy European Mobility Week! 
As if its free nationwide public transport network weren’t enough, completion of section C of the Luxtram project gives the Grand Duchy extra reason to celebrate European Mobility Week September 16-22. This year’s theme is “Better Connections” to raise awareness about sustainable mobility and promoting behavioural change in favour of active mobility. Luxembourg’s groundbreaking mobility strategy is all about better connections - a win-win initiative that encourages greener mobility alternatives while easing the financial burden on lower-income passengers.

The project is part of the country’s National Mobility Plan 2035, which aims to provide free, efficient and low-carbon public transport for all. This new segment was the first contract executed in design and build for client Luxtram, which means delivering both engineering and execution in 18 months.
