LuxTram: efficient and low carbon mobility in Luxemburg-city

20 Jan 2021

In the summer of 2020, Tractebel was delighted to  be amongst the winning Design & Build Consortium for the section C of the tramway network in Luxembourg. Together with the entire Consortium members, the Urban team of Tractebel Belgium is looking forward to continue the collaboration with LuxTram to deliver an additional 1,2 km transport infrastructure segment - part of the 16,2 km Tram network - with two new tram stations of which one multimodal exchange hub “Lycée Bonnevoie” in 2022.

The complete tramway network planned by Luxtram aims to meet the growing need for low carbon mobility resulting from the strong socio-economic development of Luxembourg.

The first important design milestone was reached last December with tremendous efforts from all stakeholders. This will enable to start the works on time early 2021, as planned.

The works to be performed by the Consortium for this section C include all the systems required for the tramway operation: infrastructure (railroads and platforms, LAC, shunting area, tramway and CREOS multitubulars), equipment (CTM, railway signaling, traffic lights, transformer station, etc.) and related infrastructures such as stations, areas adjacent to the carriageway, driver’s control room and underground substation. The consortium is made of Contractors Sopinor and Frateur-De Pourcq, along with Tecna, Tractebel and HAS, as part of the design team.

“In March 2020, the Luxembourgish government introduced free mobility, by giving access to its entire public transport network, free of charge. For all. A bold decision that will contribute to better mobility, especially in cities.  Through our involvement in the construction of the new Tram network, we are delighted to contribute to the future of mobility of Luxembourg, share our experience of integrated urban tramway development and to collaborate with such imaginative Client”, according to Business Development and Sales Director Alexandre Vanheule.
