Floating solar panels at the Terhills Resort

12 Jul 2021

The doors of the Terhills Resort opened a few weeks ago in Dilsen-Stokkem next to the Hoge Kempen National Park. It is a project in which sustainability has been put in the center with CO2 neutrality as a goal. Tractebel has therefore been able to implement an innovative technology: a floating photovoltaic power plant.

The PV plant total installed capacity is around 3 MWh, realized with around 7000 solar panels. 2/3 of it the system is installed on the ground of the Terhills complex, while the remaining 1/3 is installed on an artificial lake, part of which is used for recreational water sport activities. The floating solar installation offers several advantages including potential increased yield due to the water cooling effect, and minimizing usage of useful land.

As investor LRM needed a complete and long term partner and that is why they chose Tractebel. We have been charged with energy yield assessment, RFI preparation, RFQ preparation, high-level design review, construction monitoring & auditing.

We will also still perform the provisional acceptance verification in the coming weeks, intermediate acceptance in 1 year, final acceptance in 2 years and then yearly operational follow-up for 15 years.

“LRM has developed the Terhills PV park which will produce around 3000MWh per year. Half of the energy will be used directly by the Terhills resort. Thanks to their expertise in the (floating) PV domain, Tractebel PV experts in Belgium and Romania offices have accompanied LRM through all stages of the project development : from procurement all the way to construction monitoring and support during taking over.” Jan Heinen, Project Engineer.
