Redevelopment N3 for more sustainable mobility

16 Dec 2020

The Urban Team is delighted to announce that they have been awarded the study for the redevelopment of the N3 Leuvensesteenweg in Tervuren by the AWV Vlaams Brabant. The first phase of this project started at the beginning of December 2020.

The project takes place in the last section of the N3, between Leuven and Brussels, without bicycle paths. The main goal of the project will therefore be the integration of safe and comfortable separate bicycle paths. To increase the speed and punctuality of public transport the integration of a bus lane will be investigated. The creation of those alternatives to travel by car contributes to the decongestion on the road, to accomplish a more sustainable modal split. Tractebel will be responsible for the survey and determination of the property boundaries up to the (preliminary)design.

It is a complex project with the first major challenge being the intersection with the Stationsstraat. The complex terrain, the limited available public space and the value of the green surrounding makes it a real design challenge . Only after a thorough study of this critical intersection, the preliminary design of the other sections of the project can be started. Simultaneously we will develop the overarching vision of the project to monitor its cohesion.

“This project will enhance the ecological connection between the Moorselbos and the Park of Tervuren. With the improvement of more sustainable transport modes we will stimulate the alternatives for commuting by car which will lead to an increased livability in Tervuren. Given our knowledge of the terrain and good collaboration with our different partners, we are confident this project closes the missing link to more sustainable mobility in this area.”, according to project manager Michaël Berten.
