07 Mar 2019

Tractebel reinforces its leading position in sustainable urban and territorial development by acquiring the business portfolio and activities of Ecorem.

With an annual turnover of € 662 million and a worldwide presence, Tractebel is today one of the largest engineering consultancy companies active in energy, water and sustainable urban development. The company has now further strengthened its position as a leading firm in the environmental sector with the acquisition of the Ecorem business portfolio.

Ecorem was founded in 1992 and specialized in waste and water management and environmental studies in the broadest sense. By acquiring Ecorem's business portfolio and activities, Tractebel has further strengthened its leading position in sustainable urban and regional development.

Ecorem provides a wide range of services, including feasibility studies, environmental studies, and studies on integrated water and waste management. Tractebel will use the expertise developed by Ecorem in both their national and international activities.  With projects in 42 countries and 20 years of experience with International Financial Institutions (IFIs), Ecorem has access to an extensive international network.

Ecorem’s key project references include the preparation of risk management plans for non-navigable waterways, the development and application of environmental and heritage impact analysis tools, sustainable redevelopment of (urban) areas, and environmental advisory for cities and regions. Ecorem’s experienced consultants were also requested to elaborate innovative solutions for water and waste management and prepare Environmental and Social Safeguards for a number of projects in South East Asia and Africa.

Bram Vandenboom, Head of URBAN Belgium at Tractebel, highlights the importance of the acquisition: “This acquisition of Ecorem gives us additional expertise in knowledge domains that are crucial for strengthening our position in sustainable urban and territorial development. We are convinced that welcoming this innovative player on board will allow us to continue our growth in the coming years."

Walter Mondt, CEO of Ecorem, also emphasizes the step forward: "We worked and will continue to work closely with the Tractebel team in order to make this acquisition an outright success. Ecorem’s environmental expertise is fully complementary with Tractebel in the countries where they are active, which allows us to strengthen each other and our ambitions. Thanks to this transaction we generate a win-win whereby both sides can develop further and offer added value. We’re already enthusiastic about sharing our knowledge, experience and reputation so that Tractebel can offer its customers an even wider range of services."

The acquisition of the business portfolio took place on Friday, March 1st.
