Improving energy access across Sierra Leone

11 Jun 2018

Tractebel is contributing to an ambitious new project to bring a more reliable electricity supply to more people in more communities across Sierra Leone.

Tractebel Newsletter - May 2018 | Shaping Our World

The Government of Sierra Leone, with financial support from the African Development Bank, has launched the rehabilitation and extension of the Bo and Kenema Electricity Distribution Systems benefiting more than 54,000 households.

The project will upgrade and construct a 70 km 33-kilovolt overhead line between Bo and Kenema. To enhance the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply between the two cities, new primary substations will be constructed, and two city centre substations rehabilitated. The distribution networks within the two cities will be restored and expanded.

For the first time, 37,000 households located in Bo, Kenema and villages along the route of the distribution line, will benefit from a supply of electricity through the installation of pre-paid electricity meters connecting them to the line. The 17,500 households already connected will benefit from a more reliable supply of electricity. The project will also provide technical training for staff at the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).

By increasing the power transfer capacity, the reliability and availability of power supply, both cities will benefit from the CLSG (Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone & Guinea) interconnection project expected to provide reliable and affordable energy.

In this project, Tractebel will be responsible for the design, the tendering process for selection of an EPC contract, site supervision during execution of the works, and assistance during warranty period.
