Spartacus tramway between Hasselt and Maastricht

Hasselt-Maastricht
Linked solutions

This project is part of the Spartacus plan for Belgian Limburg, proposed by De Lijn. The aim of this project is to give the province an extra link by connecting Hasselt, Lanaken and Maastricht by means of a fast tramway service.

Client De Lijn
Location Hasselt, België
Period 2018 - 2023

The infrastructure is to be designed for fully electric traction vehicles. On the stretch between Hasselt station and the Hasselt University campus in Diepenbeek, double track will be built, while the rest of the line will be single track, with the exception of the sidings. A maintenance depot is planned in the Crutzenstraat in Hasselt. In Lanaken, tracks and switches will be laid to connect to the city's future streetcar and bus depot.

The route of the tramway line has already been chosen. It will connect the station of Hasselt with the Maastricht Mosae Forum and will cover a distance of about 30 km, of which 27 km will be in Flanders. The Maastricht-Hasselt streetcar line will have 12 stops: ten in Flanders and two in the Netherlands.

Vehicles will operate in urban areas at speeds of 10 to 35 km/h, and outside these areas accelerate to a maximum of 100 km/h. The vehicles will be 37 m long and 2.75 m wide.

The 5-year project has already started in August 2018. The tramway is scheduled to enter service at the end of 2023 and will be fully operational in 2024.
