In 2014, Beliris (a collaboration between the federal state and the Brussels-Capital Region) decided to completely rebuild this dock in order to create a new 28,000 m² regional park.
The plans for the park are based on the views expressed by local residents and stakeholders in the neighborhood during a broad consultation process. The building permit was granted in April 2018.
Specifically, the project aims to create a wide green promenade along the canal, with new play and recreation areas (sand boxes, street furniture, fountains, etc.), relaxation areas (grassy areas, benches, tables, etc.), a skate park and two sports fields. The new park will also be equipped with special lighting to encourage walkers to discover the various themed sections of the park. It is also planned to take advantage of this new development to green the banks of the canal as much as possible with trees of all shapes and sizes.
The new park, which is much more than a mere green space, aims to completely re-purpose the banks of the canal and fits perfectly into the regional vision of improving the living environment and urban transformation of this strategic zone of the capital. The intention is to create a new recreational and green space in the heart of the city for the people of Brussels, a place for walking, relaxing and having fun on the waterfront. The area will also form an important link between the various Brussels parks.
Work began in the summer of 2019 and is scheduled to last until 2022.
Tractebel's assignment includes: project management, park design and preliminary studies on soil contamination.
