Period 2020 - 2026

To support this ambition the R2, including the Liefkenshoek Tunnel, must be connected, improved and strengthened in order to achieve optimal accessibility of the port and to direct traffic around the city as much as possible. To increase the capacity of the R2, the existing bottlenecks must be reduced, particularly in the Frans Tijsman Tunnel.

In this context, it was decided to renovate the existing Tijsmans tunnel and to build a second tunnel next to it.

Tractebel, in collaboration with Greish and Arcadis, won a framework contract for a period of 7 years that includes the following tasks:

- the development of the project

- the preparation of applications for building permits

- the drafting of the specifications

- participation in the selection of successful tenderers

- the follow-up of the execution works

The disciplines involved are: geology and geotechnics, civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, tunnel, bridge and road construction, electromechanics and technical installations for traffic and tunnels, tunnel safety; environmental and landscape aspects, mobility aspects.
