GIBE III Hydropower Plant

The Mission

The project aims to design and construct the highest Rolled Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam in the world at the time of its construction, reaching an impressive height of 245 meters. This ambitious goal presents significant engineering, logistical, and environmental challenges in a complex geographical setting.

The Solution

Tractebel supported the project with a broad range of services, including the review of the Feasibility Study and Basic Design, preparation and negotiation of EPC contract documents, and an independent cost assessment. We also provided project management, planning follow-up, design and construction supervision, and assisted during commissioning and the Defect Liability Period—ensuring quality and performance throughout.

The Impact

Once completed, the dam will significantly boost Ethiopia’s renewable energy production capacity, supporting national development and contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for the region.
