Mexico embraces wind and Tractebel

13 Mar 2020

With Tractebel completing wind farm project Tres Mesas 3 and moving ahead with Tres Mesas 4 for ENGIE MEXICO, the country’s ambition to reach 35% total energy generated by clean sources by 2025 is a big step closer.

Important to boosting green energy supplies to the national grid and meeting high power demand in the capital Mexico City, the Tres Mesas (TM) wind project is found east of the Sierra Grande Mountains in the state of Tamaulipas. The site takes advantage of unobstructed wind flow over the region’s well-known mesas’ (plateau) edges. With TM1&2 already operating, ENGIE MEXICO, with Tractebel, is close to completing TM3. Now eyes turn to the TM4 project, similarly won by ENGIE in Mexico’s third Power Auction held in 2017 as part of the country’s government-supported Energy Reform Law (2014).

Comprising 24 of the latest Vestas WTG (Wind Turbine Generators) model V150, TM4 capacity will be 100,8 MW. Tractebel services, with a 14-strong team from Mexico, Chile and Belgium cover; Project technical specifications, Pre-selection BoP Bidders, Civil, Electric and WTG design review, WTG production inspections and Construction & Commissioning services. With Tractebel’s support in the BoP selection and negotiation, as well as WTG supplier contract, ENGIE MEXICO has now signed the two deals with Global Energy Services and Vestas respectively. Bringing even more new energy, employment and economic activity to the region, TM4 is looking good to go!

As Leonardo Joselen, Project Manager says, “Working on TM4, following TM3, is motivating for us as it means our client is satisfied with our work and is happy to continue with us through the final phase. We’ve been welcomed here and completing the one project and beginning the other means we can keep the same team on site and in back office, making full use of the experience and understanding of local context and regulation specifications acquired. It’s also feels good to be helping Mexico towards its zero-carbon future”.
