After a long trip passing through China, Spain and Denmark, the first wind turbine generator components of Taiba Project, the soon-to-be largest wind farm of West-Africa, have safely arrived in Senegal. As Owner's Engineer, our Tractebel experts are excited about the new phase Taiba project is entering.
Senegal currently depends on imported fossil fuels for the majority of its power supply. Lack of production capacity presently is causing frequent power outages of whole districts, while transmission losses as well as old thermal power plants result in high production costs.
In this context, Taiba N'Diaye Project, the first utility-scale wind power project in Senegal and the soon-to-be largest wind farm of West-Africa with 158.7 MW, forms a critical component of the local Government’s strategy to increase clean electricity production and diversify the country’s energy mix.
Since 2016, Tractebel acts as Owner’s Engineer on behalf of Lekela, a renewable power generation company and investor of Taiba. “This is our second contract with Lekela, building on a fruitful relationship with a promising future. This success consolidates the position of Tractebel in Western Africa, and at the same time represents an important recognition of our wind experts capabilities worldwide,” said Johan Craemers.
Taiba is entering a new phase! While road works, substation construction and foundation pouring are at full speed, the first Vestas V126 3.45 MW wind turbine generator components have safely arrived in Senegal through the port of Dakar, after a long trip.
In the coming months, 46 nacelles, drive trains and hubs, 138 blades and 230 tower sections will be delivered on-site. While the first foundations are almost finished and the main crane has arrived, the installation phase will soon commence. Commercial operation is expected for July 2020.
