World’s largest container vessels to enter the Port of Antwerp

11 May 2021

The Ports & Waterways department of Tractebel is proud to present the result of the design for the new quay wall and all related marine works to upgrade the Europa Terminal in the Port of Antwerp. The existing caisson quay wall had been in use since 1990 and no longer meets current needs. Therefore, the new one will allow the largest container vessels in the world to enter the Port of Antwerp.

The project was recently put out to tender and our teams are excited to continue managing the design process and to offer a tailor-made solution for the new quay wall. We look forward to being able to support the Port of Antwerp through the full project cycle until the end of the works.

The terminal is located in the tidal area of the Scheldt and will provide access to vessels with a draught of up to 16m. The total length of the new quay wall is approximately 1200m, which means that two container ships will be able to be handled simultaneously. This will not only increase the vessel capacity but also the container capacity.

Furthermore, the loss of capacity of the terminal during the works will be limited because the construction of the quay wall will be done in three phases over a period of 9 years. This project is a complex and technical challenge that the Ports & Waterways team took happily as engineering partners for large marine works.
