New medical center in Bilzen, an example of modernity and sustainability

22 Mar 2021

The doors of the new medical center in Bilzen opened on 16 March 2021. The result is a beautiful, open and spacious building, where the reception of patients and visitors is a priority. The medical center is not only modern, there is a lot of technical ingenuity behind it.  The emphasis is on sustainability and flexibility, objectives that are in line with Tractebel's strategy.

The new 3850 m2 building houses an outpatient clinic, a surgical day hospital with two digital operating rooms, a medical imaging service and a HWP37 GP outpatient clinic. There is also an underground parking lot with 44 spaces and a bicycle shed.

After a difficult start due to COVID-19, construction works started in September 2019 in coordination with Vesalius Hospital. The design, construction and maintenance of the building were entrusted to STRABAG Belgium. For the techniques, the partner was SPIE, the design office for the special techniques was De Klerck Engineering. And the building was designed by GAF Architects of Rotterdam.

The Tractebel teams were responsible for program management and route guidance.

The concrete structure allows for a beamless construction, which facilitates the installation of any additional technical installations, at the same time future openings and passages are already indicated. In this way, the possible extensibility of the work area is elaborated. The building can be a link to possible neighboring buildings. The new medical center is the first step in the further development of the entire site.

The climate ceilings work through a water system that is placed on ceiling tiles. Because the supply of heat and cooling immediately enters the room, a pleasant indoor climate is quickly achieved.

"The management of Tractebel was done in an open relationship with the facility management of AZ Vesalius and benefited from direct communication. COVID-19 had a big impact for every party in this project. The result can still be seen as a success for the entire construction team, from the entire medical staff when drawing up the schedule of requirements to the last lick of paint. Tractebel is pleased to have been able to collaborate on the center, which is also the start of an entire urban development. With respect for the work that AZ Vesalius will carry out in the center, we are happy to hand over the building." Bart Moors, Senior Project Manager.
