How to implement green-blue grids

25 Mar 2021

Tractebel has been appointed by the Flemish government's environment department to create a practical guide to green-blue grids, a concept that is still little known but which helps to make the urban built environment more ecological and sustainable. They not only provide a pleasant living environment for people, but also a framework for ecological development, climate adaptation, climate change mitigation and circular water use.

Municipalities' knowledge of the nature, possibilities and applicability of existing instruments (such as land swaps, planning damages, etc.) is still limited. For this reason, Tractebel's Urban team was commissioned to write a practical guide to inspire and help initiators through the process of creating a vision, implementing and managing projects following the green-blue grids principles.

The purpose of this study is to provide inspiration and practical information to initiators (local and supra-local) and design agencies for the creation of interwoven green-blue grids in the built environment (cities, towns, industrial areas) by documenting how the process has developed in other similar projects. The study will be finalized early 2022.

"Conservation of nature is one of the most important weapons in the fight against global warming, and green-blue networks play an important role in this. These networks are essential to increase climate resilience and a crucial lever to tackle the biodiversity crisis. Local authorities are the key to realizing green-blue networks, so we look forward to the outcome of this study as it aims at helping local authorities to do so." Stefanie Van Den Bogaerde, Senior Consultant Urban.
